What is an EMP/EMSP?

A EMP resp EMSP (E-Mobility (Sservice) Provider) refers to an e-mobility service provider. Electric mobility service providers offer customers access to the charging infrastructure of various providers. This is done by issuing an authorization medium, such as a charging app or RFID charging cards.

Through a contractual relationship, an EMP or EMSP provides economic organizational access to charging points for vehicle users and invoices the charged vehicle flow to customers on the basis of the contractually agreed prices.

In the background, there is a relationship between EM (S) P and charging point operator (CPO), either directly or via a roaming platform. CPO or roaming platforms charge or bill usage to the EMP on the basis of so-called CDR (Charge Detail Records). The EMP pays the usage fees agreed in accordance with the contract (kWh-price) to the CPO/ roaming platform.

EMP, CPO, and power supplier may be the same company in some cases.
