Berlin, 29 August 2024 - With over half a billion data points analysed, elvah's major Charging Market Report 2024, published today, provides the first comprehensive insight into the market for public charging of electric vehicles in Germany. With almost 500 gigawatt hours (GWh) of charged energy and 21 million charging sessions in the first half of 2024, the German charging market has achieved impressive growth. This corresponds to 115,000 charging sessions per day and an amount of energy sufficient to supply around 160,000 German households with electricity for a year.
‘With our Charging Market Report 2024, we are publishing comprehensive figures and insights for the first time that have never been seen before in this form. Our aim is to create more transparency and help the market to better understand the dynamics and developments - so that together we can drive forward the energy transition and the future of electromobility.’ - Gowrynath Sivaganeshamoorthy, co-founder and CEO of elvah.
One provider dominates Germany
EnBW leads the German fast-charging market (DC) with a market share of 31% and holds the top position in all 16 federal states. The competitors Aral Pulse, Ionity, EWEGo and Allego in 2nd to 5th place together have a comparable market share. Large charge point operators are often very successful with DC charging sites at strategic locations such as retail centres. In contrast, the market for inner-city, slow charging (AC) remains highly fragmented, with regional municipal utilities and energy suppliers occupying the leading positions.
Infrastructural challenges
Ionity leads the ranking of the most efficient DC charging infrastructure, followed by Aldi Süd and Fastned. In the AC segment, Stadtwerke München and Hamburger Energiewerke are in the lead. With just under one per cent of charging points in the AC market, they handle almost four per cent of all charging processes.
However, with a charging success rate of 89 per cent, the public charging infrastructure has a reliability that could be improved. This means that at least one in ten charging sessions at public charging points fails. This does not take into account the cases in which the charging points do not respond.
Regional differences
The report provides a comprehensive overview of the market dynamics in the individual federal states and reveals significant regional differences. Hamburg records the most charging sessions per inhabitant (0.43), followed by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Bringing up the rear are Thuringia, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony-Anhalt.
Motorways as central charging locations
Motorway charging sitesplay a central role in the German charging market. The ten most important motorways - led by the A3, A7 and A8 - charged a total of 90 GWh in the first half of 2024, which corresponds to 19% of the total energy charged in Germany in this period. EnBW and Ionity dominate the market at these sites and shape the user experience.
